O'Neil was in high school when she took part in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. The judges were impressed with her singing and she was able to advance to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised highly from judges. But she was a victim of significant defeats during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up on the third row, as well as the in the bottom two. The judges were astonished by the outcome and urged viewers to show support for contestants with strong singing talents, like Melissa. O'Neil was never in the third place again following an impressive string of performances. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil had defeated Goudie and was the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol straight away.
